Description

The City of God is one of the most influential works in Christian history and philosophy, offering a profound vision of faith, culture, and the human condition. Written by St Augustine, this monumental work continues to shape Christian thought and Western civilisation centuries after it was first written.

Composed in the early fifth century, The City of God was written in response to the belief that Christianity was responsible for the fall of Rome. Augustine presents a sweeping theological reflection that contrasts the “earthly city,” marked by self-interest and temporal power, with the “City of God,” defined by love of God and eternal truth. Through this contrast, he explores the enduring struggle between good and evil and the ultimate destiny of humanity.

Both intellectually rigorous and spiritually rich, the work offers insight into the development of Christian theology, political thought, and moral philosophy. While substantial in scope, Augustine’s writing remains engaging for thoughtful readers seeking a deeper understanding of faith and history.

A foundational text for anyone interested in Christian theology, philosophy, or the roots of Western thought.
